Course: New Testament Survey 2 – January 2024

Course Description

This course seeks to equip Christians (church members, workers, as well as pastors) who are looking to be more effective in their service to the local church by giving them an overview of the New Testament, from First Thessalonians through Revelation.

As an online class, students will complete assignments before the scheduled Zoom meetings. The Zoom meetings will focus on answering discussion questions that the students turn in as part of their weekly assignments.

Students should expect to spend about 4.5 hours preparing for each session excluding the time for the scheduled Zoom meetings. These assignments to be completed include the following:

  • Reading books of the Bible (we recommend reading along with an Audio Bible, links are provided on the assignments page).
  • Writing chapter/paragraph titles for the assigned book.
  • Submitting one discussion question for each book of the Bible covered in the course.

Course Requirements

  1. Reading. Students are required to read all the assigned books of the Bible for the class. In addition to this, students are to read the assigned introductions to these books (from GTY and from Thomas Constable).
  2. Assignments.
    1. Chapter/Paragraph Titles. Depending on the book of the NT, students will submit either chapter titles or paragraph titles for each book covered in this course (paragraph titles are for the shorter epistles).
  3. Class participation. Class participation will be done through the submission of at least one discussion question for each of the books of the NT covered in the course. These discussion questions will be addressed during the scheduled Zoom meetings. Note that these questions must be submitted before the Zoom meeting as these questions will be the focus of the meetings. Because of this, late submissions for discussion questions will not be accepted.

Course Objectives

  1. Cultivate the discipline of systematically reading through the Bible.
  2. Understand the historical background of the books of the New Testament that are included in the course.
  3. Gain proficiency in observing, interpreting, and applying Scripture.
